Teachings

Guru Nanak Ji'steachings come down today foremostly in the GuruGranth, a vast collection of revelatory verses recorded in

From these somecommon principles seem discernible. Firstly asupreme Godhead who although incomprehensible manifests in a variety ofreligious forms, the Singular 'Doer' and formless source of all forms. It is described as the indestructible or timeless form and in bothimpersonal and personal forms. Salvation or liberation depends on thegrace ('nadir'- glance) of God alone and although outside the power ofthe individual, manifests through the individual whom is seen to beunceasing in their efforts. Religious awakening is compared toundergoing a living death.

Guru Nanak Jidescribes the dangers of the self (haumai- 'I am') andcalls upon devotees to engage in worship through God's name and singingof God's qualities, discarding doubt in the process. However suchworship must be selfless (seva)- which could be said to be similar inprinciple to the nishkaam worship elaborated in the Bhagavad Gita.God's name cleanses the individual to make such worship possible. Thisis related to the revelation that God is the Doer and without God thereis no other. Guru Ji warned against hypocrisy and falsehood saying thatthese are pervasive in humanity and that religious actions can also bein vain. However the practice of satsang is considered exalted.. It mayalso be said that ascetic practices are disfavoured by Guru Nanak Jiwho suggests remaining inwardly detached whilst living as a householder.

Through populartradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teaching isunderstood to be practiced in three ways:
