"He was asleep, and he woke up and smiled," Jolie has said of adopting Maddox from a Cambodian orphanage shortly before splitting from Billy Bob Thornton in 2002. "As soon as I saw him smile, I felt like this kid wasn't uncomfortable with me. He seemed okay in my arms."

Just before Jolie made her relationship with Brad Pitt public, she took time out with Maddox for a carousel ride in New York's Central Park in June 2005.

Jolie, who has said, "Once I adopted Mad I knew I was never going to be intentionally self-destructive again," cradled her son on a carriage ride back to their New York City hotel in June 2005.

They adopted Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt (here with Maddox and Mom at a Malibu, California, toy store in July 2005) from Ethiopia in July of 2005. "My son is in love with Africa, so he has been asking for an African brother or sister," Jolie has said.

Jolie, who brought Zahara to the set of her flick The Good Shepherd, has said, "I'd love to adopt a bunch more kids, have a few and yeah, just be traveling."

"I'm so happy for my children - especially Mad," Jolie (with Maddox, Zahara and Pitt in Mumbai, India, Nov. 12, 2006) has said. "I didn't know if he was ever going to have a dad. So when I watch [Maddox and Brad] having real strong father-son time, or even when Mad tells me, 'This is a boy thing, Mom' - it's just really beautiful to see."

Pax Thien (with Jolie and Maddox in Antibes, France, on May 24, 2007) - which translates to Peaceful Sky in Latin and his native Vietnamese - was born in November 2003 and adopted March 15, 2007. "Thank you for taking such wonderful care of my son," Jolie wrote in the visitor's book of the Tam Binh orphanage. "I am sure he will miss your beautiful, caring staff as much as you will miss him."

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Jolie's first biological child, was born May 27, 2006 in Namibia - and Pitt cut the umbilical chord! "I'm very lucky," Jolie told NBC's Ann Curry (leaving St. Bart's Cafe in NYC with sister Zahara on June 16, 2007.)

Jolie, who has called her son Maddox, "my teacher in life," took her other kids Zahara and Pax to school in Prague, Czech Republic, June 25, 2007.

Jolie, who has said, "I want to be a good parent," made Maddox and Pax pay for their $1 star-shaped lenses themselves in New York's Central Park Aug. 25, 2007.

Zahara held tight to Jolie, who has called her kids, "the greatest joys in my life," while dropping brother Maddox off at French school, Lycee Francais, in NYC Sept. 11, 2007.

Jolie toted Shiloh, who she'd once called "a blob," around the Big Apple Oct. 1, 2007.
